The initial “birth pains” will climax when, after 3˝ years, the Antichrist enters the “holy place” and sets up the “abomination that causes desolation” (Matthew 24:15).  Then the Great Tribulation will commence.

A ruthless world government will control much of the world, amidst turmoil, chaos and anarchy in many places.  Unprecedented persecution of Christians and Jews will ensue.  Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles throughout the second half (42 months) of the 70th Week (Revelation 11:2).

Globally, there will be a marked escalation of natural catastrophes and cataclysms.  These will include famines, plagues, great earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, droughts, fires, severe storms, inflation, and socio-economic decline.
