The “70th Week”

After 7 + 62 = 69 of the 70 “weeks” of years,

  • 483 of the 490 years had transpired,
  • the Anointed One came to Jerusalem (Luke 19:41-44) and was “cut off” (Daniel 9:24)—that is, Jesus was sacrificed on the cross—and
  • the time count of the 70 “weeks” ceased.

The “70th Week” (the final 7 years)

  • did not take place immediately after the 69 weeks of years had passed; rather,
  • it merely was postponed to an unspecified time in the future.

Gabriel spoke of a “ruler who will come” (Daniel 9:26b).  This man would

  • begin the “70th Week” by confirming a covenant with many,
  • put an end to sacrifice and offering at the midpoint of the 7 years,
  • set up an abomination that causes desolation in the temple, and
  • eventually meet his end:
He will confirm a covenant with many for one “seven,” but in the middle of that “seven” he will put an end to sacrifice and offering.  And one who causes desolation will place abominations on a wing until the end that is decreed is poured out on him (Daniel 9:27).
